Did you know? Google may show a different photo from your chosen cover

You tidy up, find the right light and choose a photograph that represents the business well. You upload it as your Google cover photo. Then you open the profile and a different image still appears first. After another couple of attempts, it feels as though the setting is broken.

Google explains that choosing a cover photo does not guarantee it will appear as the first image. Google’s explanation That is useful to know before spending an afternoon uploading the same photograph and wondering which button you missed.

Make the whole gallery useful

I would move the focus from one picture to what people see when they open the gallery. If the first image is not your favourite, do the others help them understand the business? Can they recognise the entrance? Get a feel for the space or the work you do? For someone who has never visited, those questions matter more than one perfect shot.

At a practice, a clear entrance photograph could save a new patient walking around the building. At a workshop, a picture of the working space might explain more than a close-up of the logo. For a business visiting customers, a completed job shown with the necessary permission may be more useful than ten nearly identical pictures of the van.

Start with a short walk around the business, phone in hand. What would you show a first-time visitor? Photograph those things. Check the background before publishing: paperwork on a desk, personal numbers or people who have not been asked. The gallery does not need to resemble a catalogue, but you should feel comfortable with everything in it.

Return to it when something important changes. Refurbished premises, a moved entrance or new equipment deserve current photographs. If somebody arrives and says, “I recognised it from the pictures,” the images have done their job, even if Google did not put them in your preferred order.
